United for Health: East Devonport Rallies to Save Beloved GP Clinic

East Devonport is facing a healthcare challenge with the upcoming closure of its sole GP clinic, the East Devonport Medical Centre. This clinic has been a healthcare pillar for the community for nearly half a century. Due to a critical shortage of doctors across the country, which is hitting small communities like East Devonport particularly hard, the clinic is set to merge with SmartClinics Devonport, forming the Devonport Family Medical Centre in early 2024.

The closure, slated for February 2, 2024, has sparked worries about access to primary healthcare, especially for those without cars or who have trouble getting around. The new centre is 3.5km away, which is not a short distance for many.

Despite plans to transfer medical records and hire temporary doctors, the decision has stirred debate on the state of regional healthcare and the importance of keeping medical services accessible.

In response, the community is rallying together. There’s a planned gathering at Pioneer Park in East Devonport to raise awareness and fight for their clinic. This rally is not just about a building; it’s about ensuring that locals have the healthcare they need, close to home.

It’s a call to action for all of East Devonport to show up on Sunday, 3rd December, at 11:30 AM. There will be a free community BBQ hosted by Rotary South East, making it a day to support a vital cause and enjoy some community spirit. This is a chance for residents to stand together and send a clear message: healthcare accessibility should not be compromised.
