Symphony on the Waterfront 2023 Review

The recent Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO) concert held in Devonport’s waterfront park was a resounding success. With an audience of around 5000 people, the concert marked another successful stage of the Living City Project. The concert was a celebration of classical music, featuring works by classical masters and contemporary composers alike. The TSO’s stunning performance wowed the audience, with many locals and tourists from around the country in attendance.

The event was kicked off with a speech by the Mayor Alison Jarman, followed by a speech by Senator Anne Urqhart who officially opened the waterfront park. The Right on Cue Choir, a local community choir, entertained the audience with their performance before the TSO took the stage. The TSO’s performance was remarkable, with special mention given to soloist Anna Voshege who delivered a dramatic and powerful performance.

The atmosphere throughout the event was positive, with people of all ages and musical interests enjoying the music. One of the most memorable moments of the night was when the Spirit of Tasmania went past the crowds to dock, and thousands of people waved and cheered at the people on the ship. The concert was not just a music event but also brought the local community together and introduced classical music to people who would have never given it a chance.

One remarkable feedback from the community that stood out was an elderly man who described the last part of the concert as being similar to a rock concert. Although meant as a criticism, it highlighted the TSO’s skill and the backstage crew’s ability to make classical music exciting and engaging for all.

It is hoped that this concert will become a recurring yearly event and that the success of the event will demonstrate that the new waterfront precinct can be used to hold large concerts and draw in more frequent musical events. The event was a testament to the hard work and dedication of the TSO and all those involved in organizing and bringing the concert and park to life. It was a beautiful evening of music that will be remembered for years to come.
