Explore Marine Wonders at the Bass Strait Maritime Centre

This November, delve into the mysterious aquatic world with an enlightening event at the Bass Strait Maritime Centre. On Tuesday, 7th November 2023, a unique collaboration between CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, and the Devonport City Council, brings to you a fascinating display launch and lecture event that promises a deep dive into marine science and maritime exploration.

The event kicks off at 4:30 PM with the launch of INVESTIGATE, an intriguing high-tech shipping container exhibit brought to you by CSIRO. This interactive display invites attendees to explore the cutting-edge technology employed in modern marine investigation. The exhibit is not only educational but also an entertaining venture into the realm of marine science.

The excitement continues at 5:30 PM with a Lecture Trifecta, a mini-series of three maritime lectures presented by eminent researchers from CSIRO. Dr. Ben Arthur spearheads the session with a talk on RV Investigator, celebrating the ship’s 100 voyages into the unknown, revealing the significance of this marine science vessel and its contributions to understanding Australia’s vast marine estate.

The narrative advances with ‘Bass Strait Stories’, an engaging session that highlights the intriguing findings from the Bass Strait research voyages conducted by the CSIRO Geophysical Survey & Mapping Team. The tales of underwater exploration, marine parks, and shipping lanes offer a glimpse into the multifaceted maritime activities in the Bass Strait.

The climax of the lecture series, ‘Uncovering the Wreck of the Blythe Star’, led by Dr. Ben Arthur, narrates the intriguing tale of how RV Investigator helped pinpoint the location of the Blythe Star wreck off the southwest coast of Tasmania. The meticulous investigative process and the use of modern technology reveal a story that remained untold for 50 years.

This event is a rare opportunity to immerse oneself in the world of marine science and maritime history. The INVESTIGATE exhibit continues to welcome visitors at the Bass Strait Maritime Centre, open daily from 10 AM to 3 PM, until January 30th, 2024. For a more comprehensive experience, group bookings for INVESTIGATE + MUSEUM are now being accepted, with special discounts available for school groups.
